GENERAL SUMMARY: The Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) performs various technical, clerical and information
systems related procedures in Chemistry, Hematology, Microbiology, Blood Bank,
specimen procurement and other laboratory areas as requested on patient
specimens, control materials and proficiency samples. Operates laboratory
equipment within established policies to provide timely and accurate test
results to doctor. This
skilled individual is responsible for performing laboratory tests efficiently
and accurately for high-quality patient care. Monitors
quality control procedures and maintains involvement in Laboratory Quality
Improvement program. ESSENTIAL
JOB DUTIES: The following are duties and responsibilities that you will be required to perform. Every effort has been made to make your job description as complete as possible. · The Medical Laboratory Technician analyzes laboratory
findings to check the accuracy of the results. · Enters data from analysis of medical tests and
clinical results into computer for storage. · Sets up, cleans, and maintains laboratory equipment. · Work with laboratory equipment, helping to prepare and
analyze slides and specimens of human blood, tissue, or other cells. · The MLT operates, calibrates and maintains equipment
used in quantitative and qualitative analysis, such as chemistry, hematology,
coagulation and microbiology. · Establishes and monitors quality assurance programs
and activities to ensure the accuracy of laboratory results. · Collects and studies blood samples to determine the
number of cells, their morphology, or their blood group, blood type, and
compatibility for transfusion purposes, using microscopic techniques. · Analyzes samples of biological material for chemical
content or reaction. · Conducts chemical analysis of body fluids, including
blood, urine, and spinal fluid, to determine presence of normal and abnormal
components. · MLTs help identify abnormalities in the samples such
as malignancies, bacteria, parasites, or genetic abnormalities. · May also assist in blood-typing, or other routine
blood tests. · Provides technical information about test results to
physicians, family members and researchers. · Other duties as
assigned.KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:KEY RESPONSIBILITY #1: (30%) Organize work
and manage the use of time in order to complete technical tasks within
realistic time limits. Control laboratory equipment and adjust instruments to
perform laboratory procedures. Use
computers to operate laboratory instruments and calculate, record, evaluate,
and transmit dataKEY RESPONSIBILITY #2: (30%) Analyze and
interpret laboratory results with considerable judgment. This includes all areas of the hospital and
clinic laboratory including: hematology, chemistry, special chemistry,
serology, blood bank, microbiology, and urinalysis.KEY RESPONSIBILITY #3: (20%) Maintain
instrument and lab section as assigned by the Lab Manager. This includes scheduled maintenance and
monitoring consumables.KEY RESPONSIBILITY #4: (20%) Perform
specimen collection on patients of all age groups. This includes venipuncture, capillary draws,
culturing sites, and instructing nursing staff on correct method of sample
collection.EDUCATION AND
EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
A.S. Degree in
Medical Laboratory Technology or related scientific field with a one-year
internship or one year of clinical experience.
Professional certification as a MLT (ASCP) or equivalent is highly
recommended. Medical Assistant
Phlebotomist Certification for blood draws.
