Mee Memorial Hospital does not discriminate on the bases of race, color, religion, age, sex, physical handicap or national origin.JOB SUMMARY: Under general supervision, the Sterile Processing Technician, prepares, processes, stores, and provides medical supplies, instrumentation and special technical equipment to facility departments and outpatient clinics.PERFORMANCE DIMENSIONS AND TASKSEssential Functions1. Processes supplies and instruments by cleaning packaging, sterilizing and storing in accordance with established departmental procedures:a. Cleans, sterilizes and assembles equipment using accepted standards: washing, wrapping and sterilizing instruments for hospital departments and the clinics.b. Inspects equipment to ensure integrity and safety. Follows through on repairs as needed.c. Keeps accurate records regarding autoclave, sterility date, pressures, and temperatures.d. Other required records are accurate and completed in a timely manner.2. Understands safe use of equipment used in Sterile Processing.a. Demonstrates safe use of all equipment used in department; autoclave, cold sterilization, etc.b. Cleans the equipment as recommended by manufacturer IFU, documenting procedure3. Understands all aspects of aseptic technique.a. Demonstrates ability to prepare, assemble and package equipment and supplies using aseptic technique.b. Rotates sterile supplies; removes and treats outdated supplies.c. Stores sterile equipment on assigned shelves as per department policy.4. Understands Infection Control guideline for sterile processing.a. Follows established policies and procedures of Infection Control Committee when handling infectious waste.b. Surveillance reports generated by Infection Control Committee reflect acceptable sterility levels for all equipment/supplies.c. Follows recommended infection control policies and procedures during working hours.5. Records changes in tray content or inventory supplies.a. Notifies appropriate staff of changes in tray content or inventory supplies.b. Updates tray description files; changes file location sheets and control sheets as needed.6. Attends staff meetings and in-service programs.a. Attends all mandatory in-service programs.b. Obtains information from meetings unable to attend.7. Assists in housekeeping duties and cleanliness of the department as directed to insure safe patient environment.a. When necessary, cleans rooms, furniture, equipment and suites.b. Maintains traffic control through use of prescribed areas and corridors.c. Assists in maintenance of instruments and supplies by proper cleaning, care, utilization and sterilizations as directed.d. Assists in bacteriological counts as directed to assure safety.e. Maintains awareness of safety hazards and use of equipment to prevent damage or harm to personnel and patients.8. Participates in emergency situations as required.a. On-call for emergencies according to posted call schedule if instituted.b. Responds immediately when called upon for emergency services.c. Maintains calm demeanor in emergency situation.9. Gathers, disseminates and communicates pertinent information.a. Completes clinical assignment in a timely fashion including maintenance of equipment and supplies necessary for provision of patient care through next shift.b. Completes non-clinical assignments, tasks and projects within a pre-established agreed upon time frame.c. Prioritizes workload relative to patient care needs.d. Attends staff meetings.e. Obtains information presented in staff meetings when unable to attend.f. Computer literate, able to access information on each product used in Surgical Area.g. Participates in nursing unit goal setting.
